Groningse Studenten Budo Vereniging de Mattekloppers

Founded in Groningen on January 15, 1968, the "Groninger Studenten Budo Vereniging de Mattekloppers" has established itself as a prominent student sports club dedicated to the practice of judo and jiu-jitsu. Originally focused solely on judo, the association expanded its offerings over the years to include karate and systema, though the primary emphasis remains on judo. Notably, the Mattekloppers has a distinguished history in judo, boasting past participation in prestigious events such as the Olympic Games.

Affiliated with the ACLO (Groningen Student Sports Center), the Mattekloppers primarily welcomes students from the University of Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences as members. However, they also provide opportunities for individuals without any prior martial arts experience through various beginner courses, ensuring that newcomers can begin their journey in the world of martial arts at their own pace and level.

The training venue for G.S.B.V. de Mattekloppers is situated within the sports center of the University of Groningen & Hanze University of Applied Sciences, specifically in room 2, known as the dojo. Located within the Zernike complex in Groningen, this facility serves as a central hub for martial arts enthusiasts within the university community.

Over the years, the association has seen steady growth in its membership, with over 90 active members currently enrolled. The Mattekloppers have produced competitive judokas who have achieved commendable results both domestically and internationally. Notable achievements include participation in World Championships, European Championships, and even the Olympic Games. In recent years, the competitive judokas of the Mattekloppers have excelled particularly at the national level, securing podium finishes and national titles.

While the primary focus remains on judo, the association remains open to exploring other martial arts disciplines. Past endeavors have included the incorporation of karate and systema, demonstrating a commitment to diversifying the offerings and accommodating the interests of its members.

In conclusion, the Groningen Student Martial Arts Association "de Mattekloppers" stands as a testament to the rich tradition of martial arts within the student community of Groningen. With a focus on excellence, inclusivity, and the pursuit of martial arts mastery, the Mattekloppers continue to inspire and nurture the next generation of martial artists.
